What a Week! Poor Eloise

Oh man what a week we have had.  It all started the end of the previous week when Eloise was waking up in the middle of the night crying.  This is typical when she is teething.  It then progressed with a runny nose which turned into a really yucky snotty nose.  On Sunday she woke with a fever of just over 102 and then 103.3 in the afternoon this was after having had some motrin in the morning.  By 5:15 it was at 105.5.  We gave her some more motrin and checked it again an hour later which it was then 105.7.  We got a little nervous when the motrin seemed to not be working and called the doctors office.  The nurse suggested we head to the Children's ER since her fever was not getting better with the motrin.  I took Eloise to the ER while Trey stayed home with Cecelia.  We were quickly triaged and found Eloise to have a rectal temp of 104 (we had been doing it temporal) so they gave her a dose of Tylenol since we had just given her motrin.  They put us back into a room and started to check her over.  They did a throat culture to check for strep and a urine culture for a urinary tract infection.  There was no signs of an ear infection but did discover that one of her tubes had fallen out already.  Not very happy with that find since it has been in for less than three months.  Her lung sounded clear also.  She presented with no other signs than the high fever and a few small red dots on her face and neck.  The red dots looked like a heat rash in reaction to the high fever.  The cultures both came back negative and her fever dropped to 103.  We were sent home around 8:30 with the diagnosis of a virus.  We were told to check in with our pediatrician in the morning and to continue alternating tylenol and motrin but to up her dosage to the next level.  She was on the border with weight  as to which dosage to give so we always gave her the lower dosage.  On a side note, the Children's ER is very nice.  They have free valet parking and slurpees:)  The staff was very nice also.
Monday morning she still woke with a fever and I called into the doctors office to schedule a follow up.  We were schedule for Tuesday morning at 9am with the PA.  We continued with medicines to keep the fever down but then it all changed after Eloise woke from her afternoon nap.  She was burning hot when I got her up and when I checked her temp she was reading 106.6.  I had already given her motrin before her nap so I couldn't do that again and tylenol usually had little effect on bringing her fevers down.  I was in a panic at this time.  I called the doctor's office which had me check her temp while on the phone and got a reading of 107.2.  They told me to go directly to the ER office and that they would let the doctor know.  I did give her a dose of tylenol before we left just to try to get it down a bit.  Completely freaked out I called Trey and told him what was going on and packed up both the girls and once again visited our new children's ER.  Just as the night before we were brought back and her rectal temp showed 104.  This was about an hour after the last dose of tylenol.  Still no additional symptoms.  Trey meet us there and then took Cecelia to his parents since we were not sure how long it would take. She was checked over again and given a nose swap to check for an off chance of influenza.  Again the cultures came back negative, her fever was down to 103 again and we were sent home knowing we had a follow up at the doctors the next morning.  Our doctor called about 7pm to check in on Eloise but we missed the call.  Eloise slept in bed with me that night since I was afraid of her spiking another high fever in the middle of the night, which she did.  Her fevers seemed to spike around 105-106 around an hour before her next dose of motrin was due and after motrin is took 1 1/2 hours for it to kick in and then she was still at a temp of 103.  We headed in to the doctors office tuesday morning and meet the doctor in the hallway.  I gave him a brief description of what was going on and he immediately ordered a chest xray and full blood workup.  We left with a prescription for Zytromax and were waiting on the results from the blood workup.  Just after we left the office called and said the chest xray was clear.  Later that day Trey received a call from the office that the blood work came back showing a bacterial infection and asked us to come back into the office for a shot of antibiotics.  Luckily my mom had came to pick up Cecelia for the night just before the office called so we just had Eloise.  We got into the office around 4:30 and talked with the doctor about the findings of the blood work.  Her WBC count was at 22.47 with a normal range of 6-18.  It also indicated her neut auto were 71.6% normal 19-45, lymphocytes 11.8% normal 42-75 and Bands of 40% normal 5-12.  All in all this meant she had a bacterial not viral infection.  She was given a shot of rocephin and the doctor said if she still has a fever tomorrow to come in for another shot.  We had plans to head to Mackinac Island for the 4th of July weekend and I asked if we should cancel our plans.  The doctor didn't think we needed to and thought we should see a big improvement in Elie quickly with the shot.  The next morning did not prove to be the improvement we expected as she still had a 105 fever in the morning.  We headed back to the office in the afternoon for another rocephin shot and decided to wait and leave for Mackinac Thursday morning instead of Wednesday night.  We wanted to see if Eloise made it through the night without a fever.  That night she did have a fever of 104.5 but woke up fever free.  We decided that it would still be best to stay home for the weekend and move our trip to a few weeks later.  Even though Eloise did not have a fever we did not want to wear her out with a trip and risk the infection coming back.  This proved to be a good decision when she woke from her nap with another 105 fever.  We were already getting ready to head out to run some errands and stopped at the doctors office for a third rocephin shot.  We talked with the doctor about what we were going to do if she still had a fever on Friday.  He said to call us in the morning with an update of how she was doing and we would go from there.  Later that day we received a call from the office that they wanted us to come back in the morning for another blood draw to see if her numbers were coming down.  Thursday night she still had a 104.5 fever in the middle of the night but woke without a fever again.  We were not getting our hopes up though since it was the same as the day before.  We got the blood draw and were on our way with hopes of having the results by the end of the day.  At dinner we got a call from the doctor that her lab results had come back.  Her WBC was the same at 22 but her band count was down to 4.  He was very pleased with this even though her WBC count was still high.  He felt we were headed in the right direction and prescribed another 5 days of zytromax.  She still had a fever of 103.5 during the day but was not reaching the 105 range any more.  Friday was a good night with a mild fever but a good nights sleep.  Saturday she was around 101 but was in much better spirits and was playing around more.  She hadn't played, eaten or done much of anything since Saturday.  Luckily Eloise is use to drinking Ensure which helped keep some calories in her for the week.  We headed out to Grand Haven Saturday afternoon which some friend and had a nice walk to the beach and dinner before heading home.  We had another good night and Eloise woke up again with a low temp of 100.5 which is great in our standards for the week.  She looks to be on the mends which is a huge relief.  We already had an 18 month appointment scheduled for this coming Thursday which will be nice to have her check over again after she is feeling better.
It was an exhausting week.  Trey and I kept telling each other it could be much worse.  We know of many families that are dealing with kids with cancers and life threatening illnesses.  (Honestly don't know how they do it, I was physically and emotionally exhausted and it was only one week)  Yes, this week was scary and the though of such things were in our minds but we were in such great hands.  We are so luckily to have a great doctor's office and so many resources so close by.
On top of this, Eloise had another tooth popped through:)  That gives her a total of 5 teeth at 18 months. I am sure that did not help how she felt this week.
