Here We Go!

We received the results from the amniocentesis around 4:30 today. Dr. Avery called me and said that the results weren't good. Although we were optimistic that the baby's lungs would begin developing (as a result of having the Betamethasone shots 2wks ago), she stated that was not the case. The baby's lungs are immature and in fact not even in the transitional phase. Dr. Avery and Cummiskey decided that it would be best for me to be admitted tonight (Thursday) to be closely monitored with NST/dopplers, and I am on bedrest in the hospital. We arrived at the hospital around 6ish and have seen Dr. Hartman (OBGYN MD in our primary pratice) and Dr. Balaskas (Dr. Cummiskey's partner and husband). They are both scratching their heads on what to do at this point because the baby has 2 problems, 1. its' in the 3rd percentile and 2. its' lungs are immature. They don't normally give a 2nd dose of betamethasone (steroids) to boost the levels of surfactant until 4 weeks have passed, however they are considering giving another dose as early as this weekend or if the baby could make it another week, give another in a week. There isn't much room for this baby to fall behind any more. If this baby falls behind any more, if there is any stress, low heart rate, less movement, less accelerations, less blood flow going through the umbilical cord (found on doppler ultrasound), than they might have to weigh the risks and deliver the baby early even if the lungs aren't developed and deal with the baby getting oxygen once it is out.

They are running a FULL test on the amniocentesis and will get more conclusive results tomorrow between 12-3 to see if there is even a glimmer of hope that the lungs grew a little or is at least a slight increase of surfactant helping the lungs to grow. I will try to get some sleep tonight and get ready for another day tomorrow. Trey will take the day off on Friday to be with Cecelia and bring her up to the hospital so see me. We can only pray that this baby is in God's hands. We trust our doctors to make the right decisions to ultimately help us deliver a healthy baby. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We know we have family and great friends praying for us and this little one. More to come on Friday.
