Waiting on Another Amniocentesis

We had our follow up appointment today at the specialist to see how the baby was growing. We started the appointment with a NST which went well. Then we went in for the ultrasound. The baby looked good as it always had, great heartbeat, moving well, fluid levels good. The baby has gained weight since the last appointment and was up to 3lbs 8ozs. That is a 11ozs increase which sounded good to me. I thought for sure the doctor was going to come in and tell us that the weight increase was good and that we were going to wait for another 2 weeks and see how things are then. Well the doctor came in and said just the opposite. The baby had dropped to the 3% from 11% two weeks ago. This is a dangerous level to be at so they advised we do a amniocentesis to see where they baby's lung development was and then make a decision from there. If the lungs are mature we will be going in to deliver in the next day or so. If the lungs are in a transitional stage, just not yet mature, then they will hospitalize me for a week or so to be able to monitor the baby closely and wait for the lungs to develop a little further. If the lungs are still immature we are at a hard point and will have to reevaluate the situation and go from there. Immature lungs could mean that the problem is not just with the placenta but more with the baby. So we are praying for mature lungs and a delivery this weekend. Knowing the lungs are mature also makes an early delivery a little easier as the baby will not have so much of an issue with breathing as it could have. I will update again once we hear from the amnio results. They should come in sometime this afternoon.

Jo,

Definitely praying for you! I'll be in Michigan starting Sunday, so I look forward to being able to see you at some point and meet your new one.
